To donate now, click here or call toll-free now at 866-437-9283 Events you can attend this weekend: Today Free breakfast to celebrate the United States Marines birthday tomorrow at the Lenexa Community Center at 13420 Oak in old town Lenexa. Breakfast will be served starting at 6:45am with the ceremony beginning at 7:30am. This event began several years ago when 8-10 Marines got together in our lunchroom for breakfast. This event has now grown to the point we had to move to the Community Center. Last year we had over 300 former and current Marines. This event is open to ALL current and prior military members. This event grows larger each year and draws members from every walk of life. Overland Park: Johnson County Veterans Day Observance, 9:30 a.m. at the Korean War Veterans Memorial, 119th Street and Lowell Avenue. Speaker: Lt. Col. Hadley Turner, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sponsors: Johnson County government, Korean War Memorial Association. Kansas City, Kan.: Wyandotte County Veterans Day Commemoration, 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Hall, 600 N. Seventh St., Kansas City, Kan. Formal program begins at noon. Sponsor: Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Saturday Liberty Memorial: A full day of events is planned at the Liberty Memorial and the National World War I Museum.At 10 a.m., British author Neil Hanson will speak on his book, Unknown Soldiers: The Story of the Missing of the First World War. At 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Scott Levins of the National Military Personnel Records Center in the St. Louis area will discuss accessing records. At 3:30 p.m., a documentary film detailing the return of a 93-year-old World War I veteran to the Western Front will be screened. Records from the National Archives and Records Administration related to the conscription of Kansas City area men will be available in the museum’s Research Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Finally, a photographic exhibit of 28 recipients of the Medal of Honor will open and run through Jan. 6. Truman Museum: The U.S. Army’s Marksmanship Travel Trailer will be at the Truman Museum, 500 W. U.S. 24 in Independence, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Winners in a Veterans Day essay contest will be announced, and representatives from the U.S. Army and Wentworth Military Academy also will be available. Sunday Veterans Day Ceremony 10 – 11 a.m. Outdoors, Observation Deck The morning begins with a performance by the American Legion Band at 10 a.m. A Color Guard Parade follows. The official ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. with Col. Brit Donohue of the 24th Marines serving as emcee. The ceremony concludes at 11 a.m. with the laying of a wreath at the base of the Tower. Free Admission to The National World War I Museum on Sunday, November 11 The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial will be free for all visitors on Veterans Day, thanks to a gift from TriWest Healthcare Alliance. Guests who visit the Liberty Memorial’s Tower will be charged regular admission.The museum will open at 11 a.m., immediately following the annual Veterans Day Observance Ceremony at 10 a.m. Special Parking for Sunday, November 11 Parking is available at the Hallmark Surface Lot, located at 27th & Warwick across from Main, with a complimentary shuttle to the Museum from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Boy Scout Troop 110 will hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony in honor of Veteran's Day on Sunday, 11 November at St. Luke's United Methodist Church at 5PM. The Hickman Mills School District has given this Troop almost 50 flags to retire and this will be done in proper ceremony at the church located on the NW corner of Bannister Rd and James A. Reed Rd in Kansas City, MO. There will be a reception afterwards with refreshments in the Church dining area for as long as they last. The Troop is also asking attendees to bring at least one non-perishable food item. Donations will be collected and delivered to the local Community Assistance Center as they have reported being almost empty for the Holiday period. Free Meals for Vets on Sunday! McCormick and Schmick Seafood Restaurant on the Country Club Plaza will offer all U.S. military veterans a free entree on Sunday November 11th 2007.
