City Manager Wayne Cauthen is beloved by downtown development and bureaucrats within city hall. But the fact remains the city council agreed with Mayor Funkhouser that Cauthen was not meeting Kansas City's citizen satisfaction - and the majority of the council voted to drop the current contract.
Now the Pitch has uncovered this story. Bottom line, the mayor can elect to not support the re-hiring of Cauthen after April when his current deal expires. The only way a city manager can stay on beyond their current contract is with the mayor's sponsorship of a new proposal. The city council has no say in the matter.
